What You Need to Know

Inspections

The Albuquerque Fire Department Fire Marshal’s Office has jurisdiction to inspect (for fire and life safety violations) all commercial buildings and multi-family dwellings within the city’s jurisdiction. Fire inspections of buildings and premises can be divided into new construction and existing buildings. Fees are based on square footage starting at 500 square feet and going to 50,000 square feet+. It is the responsibility of the management or the property owner to make sure inspections are completed annually.

New Construction

Plans for all proposed new building construction or the remodeling of any building, structure, premise, and all construction requiring a permit shall be submitted to the Planning Department of the City of Albuquerque and the Fire Marshal’s Office Plans Review Section for review and approval.

If you require an inspection for new construction or an acceptance test for newly installed fire protection system (i.e. fire alarm or suppression system) or have any question concerning new construction please call the Plan Review Division at 505-924-3611.

Existing Buildings

Generally, existing buildings and premises housing businesses requiring a fire permit to operate or have fire protections systems installed are mandated an annual fire inspection.

If you would like to schedule an annual fire inspection for an existing business/building or have any questions, please contact the Fire Marshal’s Office at 505-764-6300 to make an appointment.

Public Education Programs

Fire prevention and safety is a team effort between you and the Albuquerque Fire Marshal's Office. We offer education programs to teach fire safety and prevention to children, seniors, and local businesses in our community.

Fire Extinguisher Training

Our portable fire extinguisher training program is offered to all businesses large or small. This program includes learning the basic types of extinguishers, their components and when and how to use the fire extinguisher. Once the classroom portion of the program is completed, there is an opportunity for the class to use portable fire extinguishers in a practical exercise. This exercise includes picking the correct type of extinguisher, direction of approach, and the application of the extinguishing agent on the fire.

Note: Class sizes are limited to 20 persons and a small fee is required.

If you wish to schedule a fire safety presentation or portable fire extinguisher training, please call 505-764-6300. Appointments are scheduled in the order received and a two week notice is appreciated.
